CAMDEN GARDEN CLUB TO HOST GARDEN PARTY ON THE VILLAGE GREEN

The final public event celebrating Camden Garden Club’s 100th birthday will be held on Friday, August 21 on the Village Green in Camden from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m.  Residents and visitors alike are invited to join club members under the tent for refreshments and a look back at the year’s activities.  The highlight of the Garden Party will be the presentation of a centennial gift to the town.

Beginning in March of 2015, with a month-long display in the Picker Room of the Camden Public Library, Camden Garden Club has honored its founders who gathered in 1915 to promote civic betterment in their community.  The official birthday party on March 4 was followed, a day later, by recognition as the “oldest garden club in Maine” by the State Legislature.  In May the club participated in “Business is Blooming” followed by the annual “Plants for Scholars” sale.  Record proceeds funded scholarships for Camden Hills Regional High School students majoring in horticulture related studies.  Partaking in Camden’s Memorial Day Parade provided another opportunity to return, in spirit, to garden club days gone by.  A Tea Party for new members was held in June as was the annual luncheon, where this year’s scholarship winners were introduced.  In July the focus was on the 68th annual House and Garden Tour.  A sentimental visit to the grand summer cottages from the earliest tours was a tribute to the past, and the amazing weather truly made it Camden Garden Club’s best tour ever.  Over 1200 people were able to view magnificent waterside estates as well as historic town residences.  The lamppost flower baskets, blooming traffic islands and planters, and lighted holiday wreaths are just a few of the beautification projects financed by the tour.

The Garden Party will be one last accolade for 100 years of the Camden Garden Club. Camden Garden Club is a member of the Garden Club Federation of Maine and National Garden Clubs, Inc.
